The Difference

A Day In The Khasab Oman Fjords

Khasab sits where the mountains drop into the sea, and this Musandam boat trip runs on a traditional wooden dhow. The boat heads into Khor Sham, a 17 kilometer fjord flanked by limestone walls. Spinner dolphins and humpback dolphins are common at the entrance. En route the dhow passes the fishing villages of Nadafi, Qanaha, Maqlab and Sham, accessible only by boat.

The first stop is Telegraph Island, site of the British relay station built in 1864 for the first submarine telegraph cable. Clear water with butterfly fish, groupers and coral. Seebi Island follows in the afternoon, the water here is calm, shallow and sheltered, with more fish and coral than Telegraph Island. Lunch comes out on deck between the two stops. AED 150 covers the full day including all equipment and lunch.

Hour By Hour

Khasab Musandam Dhow Cruise Itinerary

09:30 AM — Board the Dhow at Khasab Port

Your dhow and crew are ready at the dock. Board when you arrive, get settled on deck and the crew will serve Arabic coffee, tea, fresh fruits and soft drinks while the boat prepares to depart.

10:00 AM — Into the Khasab Fjords

The dhow leaves Khasab port and turns into Khor Sham. Limestone walls rise on both sides as the boat moves deeper into the fjord and the water changes color the further in you go.

10:45 AM — Dolphins

Spinner dolphins and humpback dolphins are both common in these waters. The crew cuts the engine when they appear and most groups see them at close range. The boat waits before continuing deeper into the fjord.

12:00 PM — Telegraph Island

The dhow anchors at Telegraph Island, named after the British relay station built here in 1864 for the first submarine telegraph cable between Britain and India. The water is shallow and clear with butterfly fish, groupers and vibrant coral just beneath the surface. Snorkeling gear and kayaks go in the water here.

01:00 PM — Lunch on Deck

As the dhow leaves Telegraph Island lunch comes out. Green salad, hummus, Arabic bread, biryani rice, white rice, chicken curry, beef potato curry, fried chicken, fried fish, vegetable gravy and dal fry, with soft drinks and water throughout.

01:30 PM — Seebi Island

Seebi Island sits at the far end of Khor Sham and the water around it is some of the clearest on the entire route. Coral reefs run close to the surface and the fish here are noticeably more colorful than anywhere else the dhow stopped today. Most guests who said they were done snorkeling at Telegraph Island find themselves back in the water within minutes of the anchor dropping.

02:30 PM — Return Journey to Port

The dhow turns back toward Khasab port. The fjord looks different on the way out than it did coming in. The light has shifted, the cliffs catch it differently and the boat moves with the current rather than against it.

04:00 PM — Back at Khasab Port

The dhow docks at Khasab port as the afternoon light settles over the mountains. Six hours on the water, two islands, dolphins, lunch on deck and the kind of day that is difficult to describe to someone who wasn’t there.

Real Stories

Booked an all inclusive Dubai to Musandam day trip, would highly recommend. Great communication from start to finish, picked us up from where we were staying. Assistance provided with border crossing. Dhow boat trip was amazing, seen lots of dolphins, had a wonderful lunch and snorkeled in beautiful turquoise waters. All at a very reasonably priced.

My friend and I chose to do a day trip from Dubai and this was perfect! we had an amazing experience with the driver and hosts they settled and handled everything for us, including direct hotel pick up and border crossing. We saw dolphins multiple times and got to snorkel at two beautiful Islands. This company is really 10/10 on everything from booking to the tour itself.

On the boat, Captain Mohar and Kumar were incredible – they took amazing care of us from start to finish. From the fishing to the food, every detail was handled with so much attention and kindness.
