Jebel Al Harim is the highest point in Musandam at 2,087 metres, and the drive up it is the best thing you can do in the peninsula that does not involve a boat. The road climbs from sea level to the summit ridge in under an hour, passing a fjord viewpoint, a farmed plateau sitting high in the mountains, and rock faces full of marine fossils.
The name translates as Mountain of Women, from a story that women and children were sheltered up here while the men were away fighting.

What You See On The Way Up
Khor Najd
The first stop, and the only fjord in Musandam reachable by road. A steep series of switchbacks drops to a pebble beach at the water’s edge. Most people stop at the top of the descent, where the view down the fjord is the one that ends up in photographs.
The Sayh Plateau
At around 1,000 metres the road levels into a flat green bowl of farmland with a mosque and a handful of houses. Families still grow crops and graze goats up here. After an hour of bare rock it is a genuinely disorienting thing to come across.
Marine fossils
Near the summit the rock is full of fossilised shells and sea creatures, some of them around 50 million years old. This entire range was seabed before tectonic movement pushed it up. You can see them in the rock at the roadside without hunting.
The summit ridge
On a clear day you can see the Strait of Hormuz on one side and deep into the Omani interior on the other. There is a small military installation at the very top, so the public viewpoint is slightly below the true summit.
Can You Drive It Yourself?
Only in a proper 4×4. Sections of the route are unpaved, steep and loose, and the switchbacks down to Khor Najd in particular are not somewhere to discover your rental saloon has no low range. Every season somebody attempts it in a two wheel drive and gets stuck.
If you have a 4×4 and mountain driving experience, it is a rewarding self drive. That includes an English speaking guide and driver who knows where the fossils and the viewpoints are, which matters because almost nothing is signposted.

Practical Information
Duration. Around three hours from Khasab and back. Morning departures leave at 09:30 and return 12:30, afternoon departures 13:30 to 16:30.
Best time. October to mid May. It is noticeably cooler at altitude than at sea level, often by ten degrees, so bring a layer even when Khasab is warm.
Suitability. Most of the tour is spent in the vehicle, so elderly guests and young children are fine. Not suitable for pregnant guests or anyone with a heart condition, because the track is rough in places.
Bring. Sun protection, a light jacket for the summit, and a camera. There is nowhere to buy anything once you leave Khasab.
Getting To Musandam
Jebel Al Harim is above Khasab in Oman, roughly four hours from Dubai across the Al Dara border. Check the Musandam visa requirements before travelling, and if you are driving your own vehicle read the border crossings guide, since rented and bank financed vehicles need an NOC to cross.
