Musandam is the northern tip of Oman, cut off from the rest of the country by UAE territory and reachable from Dubai in about four hours. Almost everything worth doing here happens on the water or on a mountain road, which is why a list of attractions on its own is not much use. What you actually need to know is which of these you can do in a day, which need a boat or a 4×4 you probably do not have, and what each one costs.

Things To Do In Musandam Oman
1. Take a dhow cruise through the Khasab fjords
This is the reason most people come. A traditional wooden dhow takes you into Khor Sham, a 17 kilometer fjord with limestone walls rising straight out of the water on both sides. Nothing else in Musandam gives you the scale of the place the way the water does.
A full day dhow cruise runs six hours and costs AED 150 per person including lunch. If you are short on time, the half day cruise covers the same fjord in three hours for AED 125.
2. Swim and snorkel at Telegraph Island
British engineers built a relay station on this small island in 1864 to carry the first submarine telegraph cable toward India. The ruins are still visible above the waterline. The water around it is shallow and clear, with butterfly fish, groupers and coral close to the surface. Every dhow cruise anchors here and snorkeling gear is provided.
3. Watch dolphins at the mouth of the fjord
Spinner dolphins and humpback dolphins are both common near the entrance to Khor Sham. Crews cut the engine when a pod appears, and most groups see them at close range. This is not a separate excursion, it happens on the way in on every cruise.
4. Drive the mountain road to Jebel Al Harim
Jebel Al Harim is the highest point in Musandam at 2,087 meters. The route climbs past Khor Najd, the only fjord in Musandam you can reach by road, and crosses the Sayh plateau, a flat bowl of farmland sitting high in the mountains with a few Bedouin homes on it. Marine fossils sit in the rock near the summit, left from when this was seabed.
You need a 4×4 and the road is not one to attempt in a rental saloon. Our Khasab Musandam mountain safari is AED 700 per vehicle rather than per person, so it works out cheaper the more of you there are.
5. Camp on a beach only reachable by boat
Saif Al Ghareeb is a stretch of shoreline inside the fjords with no road to it. You arrive by dhow in the afternoon, the crew sets up tents and cooks dinner, and there is no light pollution at all. Beach camping starts at AED 450 per person and includes the day cruise that gets you there.
6. Sleep on a dhow anchored in the fjords
The alternative to camping is staying on the boat. The dhow anchors deep in Khor Sham, dinner is cooked on deck, and you sleep on mattresses under the open sky with the cliffs on either side. 7. Dive the Musandam reefs
Musandam has some of the best visibility in the region and the reefs are far less dived than those further south. Two guided dives with equipment provided is AED 500 per diver on our Musandam diving trips.
8. Kayak between the cliffs
Kayaks come with every full day and overnight cruise at no extra cost. Paddling into the narrow inlets away from the boat is the quietest thing you can do in Musandam. Overnight charters include one kayak, with extras at AED 300 per day.
9. Visit Khasab Fort
A seventeenth century Portuguese fort in the middle of Khasab, now a small museum covering the peninsula’s history, boat building and the smuggling trade across the Strait of Hormuz. Cheap to enter and worth an hour.
10. See the rock carvings at Tawi
Prehistoric petroglyphs of boats, horses and human figures carved into rock faces just outside Khasab. They are unmarked and easy to miss without someone who knows where to stop. Included on our Khasab city tour, AED 700 per vehicle for three hours.
11. Fish with handlines from the deck
The crew keeps handlines on board and the fjords are full of fish. On overnight charters what you catch can go on the barbecue.
12. Ride the banana boat
Available as an add on at AED 600 per hour on private charters. It is the thing children ask for.
What Can You Actually Do In One Day?
If you are coming from Dubai for the day, you get one activity, not several. The drive is around four hours each way plus the border, so a day trip is a cruise and nothing else. Our Musandam Khasab tour from Dubai is door to door and runs about 14 hours in total for AED 535 per person, with the border handled for you.
If you want the fjords and the mountains on the same day you need to already be in Khasab, or take the half day cruise and mountain safari combination at AED 470 per person.
Two days is where Musandam opens up. That gets you a full day on the water, a night either camping or on the boat, and the mountain road the next morning.
Best Time To Visit Musandam
October to mid May. Sea conditions are calm, the water sits between 22 and 32 degrees and visibility for snorkeling is at its best. June through September brings serious heat and rougher water, and dhow cruises stop being enjoyable. Beach camping closes earlier than the cruises, usually in the first or second week of May.
Getting To Musandam
Most visitors drive from Dubai, around 200 km and three and a half to four hours through Ras Al Khaimah and over the Al Dara border crossing. There is also a daily Oman Air flight from Muscat to Khasab and a ferry from Shinas.
If you are driving yourself, your vehicle has to be registered in your name, Oman insurance is required and available at the border for around AED 100, and rented or bank financed vehicles need an NOC. Our border crossings guide covers the detail.
Visa And Documents
Khasab is in Oman, so you cross an international border to get there. Most nationalities get a visa on arrival at Al Dara. Your passport needs at least three months validity, UAE residents need their Emirates ID, and single entry UAE visa holders are generally not permitted to cross. Every activity above except the fort and the petroglyphs needs either a boat or a 4×4.
